Blog #9: Enjoying Nature at Grassy Waters Preserve

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

Hello! Welcome to my blog for this week. For today's class, we were in for a major surprise, as we told at the last minute that we would be going on a field trip to Grassy Waters Preserve! I have never been to Grassy Waters Preserve before; however, I have visited nature parks quite similar such as Green Cay Wetlands and Loxahatchee.

Out of all the places we visited this semester, I'd say Grassy Waters was my favorite. There was so much wildlife to explore! I'd tried to capture as many pictures of the organisms we saw along the boardwalk as possible.

For this trip, like the others, I brought my professional Canon camera that way I could get good close-ups of subjects with the small details included.

When I got back home, I began to sketch out the various organisms I saw on the trip. Unfortunately, most of the subjects I took photographs of I could not measure size since they were off the boardwalk or moving objects.

I ultimately decided to render a Blue Dasher, or Pachydiplax longipennis. Yes, I agree, the scientific name is pretty funny. I started by first using a 4H graphite pencil to sketch the shape and details of the dragonfly. Then I used a gray colored pencil to shade in the darker areas of the insect. From there, I colored the rest. On a separate piece of paper, I wrote out all the colors I used in this illustration (excluding Prismacolor Premier White).

After applying all the colors down, I used a white colored pencil as a blender and blended the colors together, making the colors more smooth on the sheet. Next, I used a Q-tip to remove as much of the wax off the paper.

As a side note, I'll admit taking this class has drastically improved my photography skills, which is awesome because I used those skills to take the beautiful shots below (which I'm very proud of).
